What Is Type 2 Diabetes?
Type 2 diabetes stems from a specific impairment in the regulation and use of sugar in the body.
Type 2 diabetes is a two-pronged issue–first, cells respond poorly to insulin, a hormone that is important for storing glucose (sugar) as fat. This means more insulin is needed to produce the same glucose-storing effects. Secondly, the pancreas does not produce enough insulin altogether, which often results in the need for exogenous insulin.
If cells are less sensitive to insulin, then less sugar can be stored in cells. This inevitably leads to high blood sugar levels which can lead to disorders in various bodily systems. This is why diabetes increases the risk of serious issues in the immune, nervous, and circulatory systems in the body.
Unlike type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes features a pancreas that can still produce insulin, albeit in reduced amounts. Those with type 1 diabetes do not have a pancreas that produces insulin, meaning it must all be provided via outside sources.
What Causes Type 2 Diabetes?
The causes of type 2 diabetes are still being understood, but strong correlations can be made between diabetes and ultraprocessed and/or sugary foods. Lack of exercise can also be a contributing factor for some, as well as being overweight or obese. Diabetes is also believed to be linked to genetics as well. However, there are always exceptions to these correlations so it’s important to look out for signs of diabetes.
Signs you may have type 2 diabetes include but are not limited to the following:
- Increased and/or uncharacteristic hunger
- Frequent urination
- Blurred vision
- Dry mouth
- Increased thirst
- Slow healing
- Tingling or pain in the feet or hands
- Yeast infection
- Itchy skin
