Ways to Prevent Diabetes
As diabetes becomes more prevalent, the medical field has placed time and research into finding the best way to prevent diabetes. Generally, the keys to prevention lie in diet, exercise, and monitoring. These three areas are key to preventing diabetes, and the ailments that are associated with diabetes.
Diet
A good diet, in terms of diabetes prevention, is highly individual and is best created with a dietician or doctor. However, there are some general recommendations that diabetes experts agree can help most people when dealing with diabetes:
- Avoiding junk food and fast food
- Avoiding added sugar
- Avoiding simple grains
- Keeping carbohydrate intake moderate
- Try to eat lean meats
Exercise
Regular exercise is another excellent way to prevent diabetes as well as keep existing diabetes in check. You don’t need to become a bodybuilder or track star, either; a primary care physician will recommend regular walks, jogs, or other light exercises can help with diabetes. Regular exercise can make your body more insulin-sensitive over time.
While exercise should absolutely be used by those with diabetes, it needs to be done safely. If you currently have diabetes, it is important to always check your blood sugar levels and adjust them accordingly if needed.
Monitoring
Prevention of diabetes is made much easier if people know what to look for. If you know the signs of diabetes, you can be better prepared to adjust your lifestyle or help others who may be at risk of diabetes.
Some of the common signs of diabetes include:
- Frequent urination
- Elevated hunger
- Fatigue
- Irritability
- Blurred Vision
- Frequent infection
- Slow healing
Of course, these symptoms can be indicative of many different conditions, so an appointment with a medical professional is necessary to accurately diagnose diabetes.

What to Know: Types of Diabetes
There are three main types of diabetes: type-1, type-2, and gestational.
Type-1 diabetes occurs when the body produces little or no insulin and cannot utilize glucose to make energy. Type-1 diabetes is most commonly diagnosed in children and young adults but can affect people of all ages.
Type-2 diabetes is the most common by far and is characterized by the body’s inability to properly utilize the insulin it is producing. Type-2 diabetics often need some type of insulin to keep their blood glucose levels under control.
Gestational diabetes consists of high blood glucose during pregnancy. This type of diabetes can correlate to issues during pregnancy, as well as increased risk of type-2 diabetes for the mother and child later in life.
